Global Robot Density Nears Triple Since 2015, Asia Leads the Surge
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) released its 2021 World Robot Statistics, revealing a dramatic acceleration in global robot adoption. Robot density—defined as the number of industrial robots per 10,000 employees—rose from 66 in 2015 to 126 in 2020.
Geographically, Asia/Australia now leads with 134 units per 10,000 workers, followed by Europe at 123 and the Americas at 111. The five most automated countries are South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Germany, and Sweden. The United States climbed from 176 units in 2015 to 255 in 2020, ranking seventh worldwide ahead of Taiwan (248) and China (246).
China’s density jumped the most of any nation, quintupling from 49 in 2015 to 246 in 2020 and moving from 25th to 9th place globally.
South Korea remains the world’s most automated country, maintaining a robot density of 932 units per 10,000 workers—a record set in 2010. Its automotive and electronics sectors are the largest adopters of industrial robots.
Singapore follows with 605 robots per 10,000 employees, growing at an average of 27 % annually since 2015. Japan ranks third with 390 units per 10,000 workers and is also the largest industrial robot manufacturer, producing 174,000 units in 2020—accounting for 45 % of global supply.
In Europe, Germany tops the continent with 371 units per 10,000 workers. France’s density is 194, slightly below Spain (203), Austria (205), and the Netherlands (209). Sweden leads Europe with 289, followed by Denmark (246) and Italy (224). The United Kingdom, at 101 units, has improved from 71 in 2015 but remains 24th worldwide.
