Smart Factory Connectivity: Advancing Industrial IoT Efficiency

With the recent advancements made in industrial manufacturing technologies, the industry itself is fast becoming more sophisticated and smarter.

In particular, the advent and adoption of the Industrial Internet by the wider manufacturing community, there has been what can best be described as an explosion in the amount of data that is produced by the interconnected sensors, actuators, motors, controllers, PLCs and many other devices on the factory floor.

This white paper, entitled “Smart Factory Connectivity for the Industrial IoT”, describes smart factory connectivity challenges for IIoT devices, and the solutions available today to manage these real-time data processing challenges. It was written by Ashish Pathak, Staff Marketing Manager, Industrial Automation Segment at Renesas Electronics America.

From the paper’s abstract:

Manufacturers, with innovation driven by the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), are poised to significantly improve productivity and efficiency. The result will be lower operational costs, reduced waste and an overall increase to their bottom lines.

These “connected factories” will require a flurry of smart and interconnected devices on factory processes, resulting in an explosion of data generated, aggregated and analyzed. This massive amount of data must be processed in real-time so as not to create a bottleneck, yet still have the bandwidth to provide context and intelligent analytics. To manage this abundance of data in a deterministic manner, industrial OEMs are turning to open, standardized Ethernet-based protocols.

This paper describes smart factory connectivity challenges for IIoT devices, and the solutions available today to manage these real-time data processing challenges.
