New Aberdeen Group Report Highlights the Critical Role of Maintenance in Asset‑Intensive Industries

According to the latest Aberdeen Group benchmark report, Collaborate Asset Maintenance Strategies, 87% of asset‑intensive operators confirm that proper maintenance is essential to their financial success.

The study shows that leading firms outperform their peers in critical metrics: higher return on invested capital, increased asset productivity, improved uptime and lower maintenance costs.

“Proactive maintenance processes that complement scheduled preventive work lift companies into the best‑in‑class category," said Michael Israel, research director of Service Chain Research at Aberdeen. “Best‑in‑class firms rely far less on reactive break‑fix repairs than laggards.”

Aberdeen recommends the following actions to elevate maintenance performance:

• Adopt aggressive proactive maintenance strategies.
• Leverage analytics software to benchmark actual asset performance against targets.
• Centralize maintenance management and control.
• Build a business case for CFO investment in service and maintenance.
• Plan spare‑parts and MRO inventory strategically.

The benchmark examines how top organizations excel in process definition, organizational alignment, data management, technology integration and performance monitoring. Over 300 companies—including Coors Brewing, DuPont, Pacific, Hamilton Sundstrand, Hormel Foods, Nova Chemicals, Kimberly‑Clark, Transalta and Yum Brands—participated in the quantitative study.
