Global Maintenance & Availability Performance Indicators: Aligning SMRP and PR EN 15341 Standards

When organizations aim to benchmark maintenance and availability performance, a unified framework of predefined indicators is essential. Without a common language, comparisons risk becoming apples‑to‑oranges.

The Society of Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (SMRP) and the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) have launched a joint initiative to document and compare existing metrics. Their collaboration provides maintenance managers with clear definitions and a shared vocabulary for key performance indicators.

SMRP has long championed a suite of Best Practice Metrics that quantify maintenance effectiveness. The metrics are continuously refined and are publicly available at www.smrp.org. In 2000, EFNMS introduced a complementary set of indicators, now codified in the European standard prEN 15341 – Maintenance Key Performance Indicators, accessible through www.efnms.org.

The current comparison effort focuses on mapping similarities and differences between SMRP metrics and the prEN 15341 standard. As global operations expand, the need for a harmonized understanding of these indicators grows, and this work is poised to become part of a worldwide maintenance standard. The Pan American Federation of Engineering Societies’ Technical Committee on Maintenance (COPIMAN) has joined the initiative, underscoring its international relevance.

The outcome will be a comprehensive document that highlights commonalities and notes distinctions. The first milestone—identifying overlapping metrics—has already been achieved.

Key Metric Comparisons

SMRP Metric prEN 15341 KPI
1.5 Annual Maintenance Cost per RAV (E1) Annual Maintenance Cost – Replacement Asset Value
1.4 Stocked MRO (E7) Stocked MRO Inventory Value – Asset Replacement Value
5.13.1 Contractor Maintenance Cost (E10) Contractor Maintenance Cost – Total Maintenance Cost
3.5.2 MTTR (T21) Total Repair Time (MTTR) – Number of Failures
5.6.2 Proactive Work (O18) Preventive Maintenance Man‑Hours – Total Maintenance Man‑Hours
1.2 Stock Outs (O26) Inventory Requests Not Fulfilled – Total Number of Inventory Requests (Inverted)

To deepen understanding and facilitate implementation, EFNMS and SMRP host workshops centered on these metrics. Tom Svantesson of the Danish Maintenance Society chairs EFNMS Working Group 7, guiding the collaborative effort.
