SMRP and EFNMS Align Maintenance & Availability KPIs for Global Standardization
In today’s interconnected market, comparing maintenance and availability metrics requires a shared language. The Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) and the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) are pioneering a joint effort to catalogue and reconcile their respective KPI frameworks.
SMRP has long championed a suite of best‑practice metrics, publicly available on www.smrp.org. In 2000, EFNMS introduced its own indicator set, which became the basis for the European standard prEN 15341 “Maintenance Key Performance Indicators.” The current comparison initiative documents the overlaps and distinctions between these two bodies, laying groundwork for a unified global standard.
With globalization accelerating, a common understanding of maintenance KPIs is essential. The Technical Committee on Maintenance of the Pan American Federation of Engineering Societies (COPIMAN) has joined the effort, underscoring the international significance of this work.
The resulting document will highlight similarities and differences across metrics. Below is a snapshot of the first aligned indicators:
| SMRP Metric | prEN 15341 Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1.5 Annual Maintenance Cost per RAV | E1 – Total Maintenance Cost / Assets Replacement Value |
| 1.4 Stocked MRO | E7 – Average inventory value of maintenance materials / Asset Replacement Value |
| 5.13.1 Contractor Maintenance Cost | E10 – Contractor Maintenance Cost / Total Maintenance Cost |
| 3.5.2 MTTR | T21 – Total time to restore (MTTR) / Number of failures |
| 5.6.2 Proactive Work (PM & PdM) | O18 – Preventive maintenance man‑hours / Total maintenance man‑hours |
| 1.2 Stock Outs | O26 – Number of spare parts supplied / Total number of spare parts required (inverted) |
To deepen understanding, EFNMS and SMRP will host workshops focused on each indicator set, fostering hands‑on learning and best‑practice sharing.
