ISA Transfers Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanic Certification to SMRP

On November 20, ISA announced that it will transfer its Certified Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (CIMM) certification program to the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) at year‑end.

The CIMM program delivers an independent, third‑party assessment that verifies the competencies of industrial maintenance mechanics—professionals responsible for preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance, as well as troubleshooting and analysis.

“CIMM is an essential tool for maintenance mechanics to demonstrate their expertise on the shop floor,” said Rod Lincoln, Cytec Industries’ ISA volunteer and co‑developer of the program. “It also signals to management that they value safety, efficiency, and the professional growth of their teams.”

SMRP is committed to advancing maintenance and reliability through knowledge sharing, structured networks, and advocacy. The organization promotes education that enhances workplace quality, safety, and productivity.

“SMRP’s focus on maintenance professionals will ensure the continued success of the CIMM program,” said ISA Executive Director and CEO Patrick Gouhin. “SMRP’s extensive network of supervisors and managers will help integrate CIMM into a streamlined professional development pathway for mechanics worldwide.”

SMRP’s own certification portfolio, including the highly respected Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) designation, has set industry standards for many years.

“We are honored to host ISA’s world‑class CIMM program,” said SMRP Executive Director Pat Winters. “The CIMM will complement our ANSI‑accredited CMRP and further strengthen the maintenance and reliability profession.”

ISA will continue to accept CIMM applications through the end of the year and expects a seamless transition. For more information about CIMM or other ISA certification programs, visit www.isa.org/certify or call 919‑549‑8411.
