United Airlines Opens New 125,000‑sq‑ft Maintenance Hangar at Washington Dulles
United Airlines has inaugurated a new, 125,000‑sq‑ft wide‑body aircraft maintenance hangar at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The $45 million investment expands United’s technical operations, enabling simultaneous maintenance on two wide‑body or multiple narrow‑body aircraft. Dulles hosts roughly 300 technical staff and nearly 6,000 employees across the Washington, D.C., metro area.
"The partnership between Dulles and United spans decades, and this facility underscores our commitment to the region," said Greg Hart, United’s senior vice president for technical operations. "With this hangar and upgrades to terminals, gates, lounges and employee spaces, we’ll deliver greater reliability and an enhanced travel experience for our passengers."
More than 600 construction workers built the hangar, which offers 85,000 sq‑ft of enclosed aircraft space.
"Opening this state‑of‑the‑art facility cements Dulles International’s standing as a world‑class aviation hub," said Jack Potter, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. "The investment will support smooth, efficient travel for the 14 million United passengers who use Dulles each year."
United operates maintenance hangars at its Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco hubs, and is nearing completion of a wide‑body hangar at Newark Liberty International Airport.
