U.S. Steel Launches 11,000‑Square‑Foot Maintenance Training Center in Fairfield, Alabama
Fairfield (Ala.) Works of United States Steel Corporation celebrated the opening of its new maintenance training center on June 21. The 11,000‑square‑foot facility, located in the renovated Flintridge Building, features modern classrooms, labs, and an expanded in‑plant welding lab.
“Fairfield Works historically hired maintenance employees directly from the community and supplemented them with graduates from an internal maintenance learner program,” said Fairfield Works General Manager Merle Stein. “Recent shifts in the labor market have drastically reduced the availability of qualified maintenance workers in the Birmingham area, driven by changing demographics, increased automation, and the rapid growth of automotive manufacturing in Alabama. Our new facility will enable Fairfield Works to cultivate the skilled workforce essential to our plant’s long‑term viability.”
Alabama Labor Commissioner Jim Bennett joined Stein at the ribbon‑cutting ceremony and remarked, “There is a serious shortage of skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance personnel in the Birmingham region. Skilled workers are critical to the success of our manufacturing industries. U.S. Steel’s investment in workforce development in Alabama provides lifelong skills to community members who might otherwise lack access to this level of training.”
The maintenance technician program comprises 63 courses, including hands‑on exercises. Graduates must demonstrate proficiency in 30 mechanical modules or 33 electrical modules to earn certification.
Classes, which began on June 5, are taught by current Fairfield Works employees who have completed a rigorous three‑tiered train‑the‑trainer program: on‑site observation at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works in Indiana, a three‑day seminar at Fairfield Works, and several months of close mentorship from a training consultant.
