ams Unveils TCS3707: Advanced Light Sensor Eliminates Flicker-Induced Banding for Clear Mobile Photography

AMS, a global leader in optical sensor technology, introduces the TCS3707—an RGB, proximity, and flicker‑detection sensor engineered to deliver pristine photos in any artificial lighting environment.

Equipped with ultra‑high‑sensitivity RGB, Clear, and Wideband channels, the TCS3707 measures ambient color and intensity across a broad spectrum of lighting conditions. This precision enables manufacturers to implement sophisticated brightness and color‑management algorithms, as well as camera‑and‑flash color balancing, ensuring consistent image quality.

The sensor’s dedicated flicker‑detection engine identifies 50 Hz or 60 Hz AC‑powered light flicker—common in fluorescent fixtures and street lamps—that otherwise creates banding and other artifacts in images captured with rolling‑shutter sensors. By synchronizing the camera shutter to the light’s ‘on’ phase, the TCS3707 eliminates these distortions.

Beyond flicker suppression, the TCS3707’s internal FIFO allows the processor to apply flicker‑cancellation firmware at non‑standard frequencies, extending its versatility. Its proximity detection, built around IR cross‑talk rejection and paired with an IR emitter, delivers reliable distance sensing for gesture and navigation features.

Packaged in a compact 2.0 mm × 2.5 mm × 0.5 mm OQFN package, the TCS3707 is ideal for mobile devices that demand high‑performance imaging without compromising form factor.
