PORT Introduces Integrated SoM IoT / Industry 4.0 Modules for Seamless Linux Real‑Time Communication
PORT expands its System‑on‑Module (SoM) portfolio with new IoT / Industry 4.0 solutions designed for Linux‑based real‑time applications. These compact modules bring PROFINET CCB and EtherNetIP (with optional EtherCAT and CANopen) onto a single board, delivering a cost‑effective and straightforward integration path.
By bundling the necessary PHYs, transformers and high‑speed Ethernet interfaces (RJ45, Mini‑RJ45 for IP20 and M12/M8 for IP54) directly on the SoM, customers only need to add the module and appropriate connectors to their host board—no additional external components required.
The SoM‑RIN32M3 communicates with the host processor over an asynchronous SPI link. Despite the independent module clock, the interface is implemented with just three pins, ensuring reliable data transfer even in mixed‑clock environments.
As the SPI master, the application controller selects the data format—MSB or LSB first—and the word length (8, 16, 20, 24 or 32 bits). A 128‑byte transfer buffer handles multiple requests, while a cyclic scheme guarantees that process data is transmitted on each control cycle. Non‑real‑time calls use the same transport but are decoupled from the real‑time path, keeping critical traffic isolated.
The modules are fully compatible with any Linux distribution that exposes SPI and I²C interfaces via the kernel, provided a high‑precision timer is available. PORT supplies an evaluation board that pairs the SoM with a Raspberry Pi, featuring PMOD/Arduino headers for rapid prototyping with other evaluation kits.
