MEN: Robust Modular DIN‑Rail System for Custom Embedded IoT Solutions
MEN’s DIN‑Rail concept delivers a fully modular platform that can be assembled to meet the exact demands of any embedded IoT application. By selecting and combining essential functions—ranging from a CPU unit to a railway‑compatible power supply and a suite of expansion modules for wireless communication, serial I/O, and memory—customers can build-to-order configurations that are both scalable and cost‑effective.
MC50I Computer Platform
The MC50I is engineered for industrial automation, featuring an Intel Atom E3900 series processor that offers low power consumption while delivering the performance and memory scalability required for demanding workloads. Integrated board‑management and a trusted platform module (TPM) provide robust security, ensuring that data integrity and device authenticity are maintained from the factory through deployment.
ME2 Data Storage Module
Designed as a DIN‑Rail extension, the ME2 module houses a 2.5" SATA hard disk or SSD in a dedicated shuttle. For larger data requirements, two ME2 units can be combined in a single system to provide up to 8 TB of reliable storage.
ME3 Serial Expansion Module
The ME3 module adds flexible serial connectivity. Its front panel features three COM ports, supporting four UARTs. The standard configuration includes an RS‑232 port, an RS‑232/RS‑422/RS‑485 port, and an RS‑422/RS‑485 or IBIS port (master or slave), enabling seamless integration with legacy and modern communication protocols.
Additional Modules
MEN’s ecosystem already includes the MC50M CPU module, the ME1 wireless communication module (supporting LTE Advanced, WLAN, and GNSS), and the MP1 wide‑range power supply, which accepts 24 V DC to 110 V DC input.
System Integration and Design
All modules communicate via MEN’s standardized expansion connectors, ensuring consistent data transfer and power delivery. The DIN‑Rail specifications cover housing dimensions, mounting options, cooling, and IP protection, while pin assignments for connectors are clearly defined to streamline system design.
Mounting and Cooling
Standard 35 mm DIN‑Rail mounting provides a space‑saving solution, with optional wall or 19" rack mounting via adaptation brackets. Each module’s aluminum housing, equipped with cooling fins, supports fanless operation, reducing maintenance and acoustic noise.
Use Cases
MEN’s DIN‑Rail family is engineered for high‑reliability environments, making it ideal for predictive maintenance platforms, IoT gateways, diagnostic servers, intelligent vehicles, passenger information systems, and ticketing solutions.
