Industrial Internet Consortium Launches 3 Pilot Programs to Accelerate IIoT Adoption

When you’re considering a new car, you’ll read reviews, gather user feedback, and finally take a test drive before making a purchase. The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) applies the same disciplined approach to digital transformation in industry, now offering three “test drive” initiatives that allow enterprises to evaluate industrial IoT (IIoT) technologies in real business settings.

These short‑term pilots stem from IIC’s longer‑running test beds and proof‑of‑concept projects. As IIC’s chief technology officer, Stephen Mellor, explains, “Test beds run over extended periods and focus on validating technology. A test drive is about taking that technology for a quick, practical run in a business environment.”

Connected worker safety, intelligent video, and IoT sensor implementation are the three focus areas for the pilot program, each slated to run for approximately three to six months. By delivering hands‑on blueprints, IIC enables non‑member end users to see these solutions in action within their own factories or operational contexts.

Mellor notes the value for both end users and IIC members: “We’re not just talking to consortium members; we’re engaging industry professionals who haven’t yet adopted these technologies. The blueprints give them a proven path to implementation, while our member partners gain real‑world case studies they can leverage across verticals.”

Beyond pilots, IIC seeks to shift industry dialogue from generic statements—such as “We have edge computing”—to concrete, actionable examples: “Here’s how we deployed edge computing in our plant, the results we achieved, and the resources that made it possible.” This specificity, Mellor argues, is essential for meaningful adoption.
