Ovo Energy Strengthens Distributed Energy Strategy with VCharge Smart Grid Acquisition
In a strategic move to bolster its distributed energy capabilities, Bristol‑based Ovo Energy has acquired Providence, R.I.‑based smart grid startup VCharge. The deal, reported by Smart Cities World, was for an undisclosed sum.
Ovo, one of England’s independent energy suppliers, supplies electricity and gas to homes across the United Kingdom. By adding VCharge’s technology to its portfolio, Ovo is positioning itself at the forefront of the transition away from centralized power generation.
VCharge’s proprietary platform is designed to accelerate the shift to renewable energy and storage. The system tackles the intermittency of solar and wind by creating energy‑storage buffers that can be tapped on demand.
At its core, VCharge employs advanced algorithms to balance individual consumer needs with grid stability. Early trials in London and Scottish social‑housing estates demonstrated that the technology improved heating management while helping reduce fuel poverty in those communities.
“VCharge’s vision is to help electricity grids worldwide transition to 100 % renewable power as renewables become cost‑competitive with fossil fuels,” said managing director Toby Ferenczi. “Partnering with Ovo will accelerate that goal and enable us to address critical issues such as fuel poverty in the UK.”
Powering Affordable Energy
Ovo sees the acquisition as complementary to its mission to make energy more affordable for all consumers. “This platform will harness energy‑storage potential to reduce fossil‑fuel dependency and lower costs,” said CEO Stephen Fitzpatrick.
Under the new partnership, VCharge plans to provide free heating‑control upgrades for electric storage heaters to 1.5 million households across Great Britain.
The acquisition comes amid Britain’s broader push to deploy smart‑grid solutions that could cut carbon‑dioxide emissions by millions of tonnes each year.
