Navigating Rapid Growth: Proven Strategies for Product Managers

The role of a Product Manager can be challenging even at mature companies, but the stakes rise sharply when a business is experiencing rapid growth. How do you keep momentum, scale features, and stay ahead of competitors during this critical phase?

ProductPlan recently hosted a live panel discussion that addressed exactly this question. I joined co‑founder Jim Semick and seasoned mentor Rich Mironov to share real‑world tactics and answer the most pressing questions from attendees.

Navigating Rapid Growth: Proven Strategies for Product Managers

A heartfelt thank you to Jim and Rich for their engaging insights, and to Andre, Ben, and the entire ProductPlan team for organizing a seamless event.

Key Questions and Expert Answers

The panel was driven by questions submitted by the audience—hundreds of them, which meant we had to cherry‑pick the most impactful topics. Below are highlights and some additional questions that didn’t make the live session.

What is growth?

Before you can navigate growth, you must define it. Growth is a multi‑dimensional concept and can be measured in several ways:

Clarity on the specific growth metric you’re targeting allows you to set realistic goals, select the right KPIs, and craft a focused product strategy.

Hardware vs. Software Timelines in IoT Growth

IoT companies often hit a bottleneck: the hardware lifecycle is usually slower than software. To prevent the hardware from stalling the entire product, consider these two strategies:

1. Adopt a Robust Build‑vs‑Buy Strategy

In early stages, validating concepts with as many customers as possible may trump a polished piece of hardware. Leverage off‑the‑shelf components to iterate quickly, then shift to proprietary hardware once you’ve secured product‑market fit.

2. Embed Future‑Proof Hardware Features

Plan for tomorrow’s features now. By designing hardware with extra sensors, compute, or connectivity in mind, you can roll out new capabilities solely through software updates. Tesla’s rollout of autopilot across all models is a prime example.

Justifying Additional Product Managers During Expansion

Growth inevitably requires a larger PM footprint. Present the case in business terms: a PM supports engineering, sales, partners, and new verticals, preventing the product team from becoming a bottleneck. Rich notes that a Scrum team costs roughly $1 MM per year; aligning that cost with PM support ensures strategic alignment and customer insight integration.

Maintaining Focus in a Startup’s Growth Phase

Startups love new opportunities, but unchecked enthusiasm can derail progress. The PM must champion the current strategy, flag misaligned initiatives, and keep cross‑functional teams aligned. Even when executives are passionate about a new idea, discipline is essential for sustainable growth.
