Shipbuilding leader Fincantieri S.p.A. (Trieste, Italy) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Teijin Automotive Technologies, the European arm of Japan’s Teijin Ltd., to jointly develop non‑structural composite bulkheads for maritime vessels.

Under the agreement, Teijin Automotive Technologies will spearhead engineering and industrialisation efforts, with Fincantieri providing critical support. The initiative aims to introduce cutting‑edge composite solutions that reduce weight and integrate multiple functions, thereby meeting the highest operational and safety standards required for modern maritime craft.

The bulkheads will be fabricated using a patented composite material from Aeronautical Service (Fiumicino, Rome), an Italian SME specializing in advanced aerospace technologies. Fincantieri already collaborates with Aeronautical Service to promote large‑scale adoption of carbon‑fiber composites and state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing techniques in both civil and military shipbuilding. The material has earned non‑combustibility certification—a critical safety prerequisite for onboard applications.

"This agreement confirms our role as pioneers in steering shipbuilding toward the best available technologies and high‑performance solutions beyond steel," said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. "The partnership further reinforces our industrial strategy to broaden the use of advanced materials across our portfolio, supporting the ongoing evolution of ship design and manufacturing processes. By integrating innovative composite solutions, we enhance vessel configuration flexibility and respond more effectively to the evolving needs of civil and naval programs," he added.
