Bambooder & Roode Boards Pioneer Sustainable Bamboo‑Reinforced Kiteboard

In a first‑of‑its‑kind collaboration, Dutch kiteboard maker Roode Boards and Bambooder Biobased Fibers have created a prototype kiteboard that incorporates BambooTape Pro, a bio‑based bamboo fiber reinforcement, in place of traditional fiberglass. The joint effort seeks to demonstrate how bamboo composites can lower the CO₂ footprint of high‑performance boards without sacrificing strength or flexibility.

BambooTape Pro is a unidirectional bamboo fiber tape designed as a sustainable alternative to carbon and glass fibers. Its key specifications are:
- Density: 1.3–1.4 g / cm³
- Thickness: 0.18 mm
- Fiber content: 45 % bamboo by volume in an epoxy matrix
It can be processed via press molding (pre‑pregs) and infusion (pre‑forms), making it suitable for automotive interiors, sports gear, electronics, and marine decks.
From an environmental perspective, BambooTape Pro has a carbon footprint of –2.9 kg CO₂ eq / kg—making it carbon negative—compared with 33 kg CO₂ eq / kg for carbon fiber and 3 kg CO₂ eq / kg for E‑glass. The material is also fully biodegradable. While its tensile strength and modulus match those of flax UD tape, they remain below those of carbon fiber.
Processing compatibility data are still limited, and the material is in the early stages of R&D for broader use.
