PtAu5 Soft-Annealed Alloy (+A): Advanced Crucible Material for Melt Digestion and XRF Analysis
The platinum-gold material PtAu5 (in the literature also Pt5Au, Pt95Au5, PtAu 95/5, etc.) is used for laboratory crucibles for melt digestion of minerals and ferroalloys, and for laboratory shells in X-ray fluorescence analysis also in fine grain stabilized state. Further use for crucibles, casings and stirrers in viscometry. The gold content reduces the wettability against glass melts, so that they can easily be dissolved out after solidification without residues. In addition, the mechanical strengthening is increased and the recrystallization tendency is reduced. Alloys up to 5% gold have been developed to enhance the mechanical resistance and dimensional stability of platinum laboratory equipment without compromising their chemical resistance. Even at 1000°C, such materials are twice as strong as unalloyed platinum. In addition, they have an extremely constant weight and they are only slightly wetted by silicate melts. Therefore, they are often used for crucibles and casings in preparation work in the X-ray fluorescence analytical laboratory.
