Eastman’s Flame‑Resistant Tritan MXF Copolyesters: Advanced Materials for Electronic Medical Devices

Since last year’s launch of its next‑generation medical‑grade Tritan MXF specialty copolyesters, Eastman Chemical of Kingsport, Tennessee, has expanded the line to meet the demanding needs of electronic medical housings and hardware.

The expanded portfolio includes flame‑resistant (FR) grades that satisfy UL 94 V‑2 flammability standards. Built on the proven durability of Tritan MXF121, the new FR materials combine excellent chemical compatibility with a broad spectrum of disinfectants used to fight healthcare‑associated infections (HAIs). They also deliver higher impact strength and improved resistance to abrasion, while maintaining the ease of processing that characterizes the Tritan MXF family—lower ejection forces for smoother demolding and minimal waste.

Brad Potter, Marketing Director of Eastman’s Specialty Plastics‑Medical division, explains that Tritan MXF copolyesters can reduce costs across the entire value chain. "By switching to a single polymer, manufacturers cut repair, return, and warranty expenses, lower scrap rates, and avoid the retooling required when transitioning from PC/ABS to Tritan MXF," Potter says. "Using only Tritan MXF eliminates the discoloration and durability issues that arise when multiple polymers are combined."

Potter adds, "Adopting Tritan MXF in medical device housings not only adds value in design and commercialization but also lowers overall ownership costs. Most importantly, the superior disinfectant compatibility of Tritan MXF allows healthcare workers to clean devices more thoroughly, thereby reducing HAIs and improving patient outcomes."
