Evonik Completes First Phase of $457M Nylon‑12 Complex in Germany

Construction on Evonik’s largest investment to date in Germany—a $457 million nylon‑12 complex—has stayed on schedule. The first plant was completed in mid‑October and is now in the commissioning phase.

According to Marcus von Twistern, project lead, the team “has delivered outstanding results amid the challenges of the SARS‑CoV‑2 pandemic. We continue to find solutions and anticipate no major delays to full completion.” Supply‑chain disruptions and entry restrictions for assembly staff were successfully mitigated. Concrete and steel framing is finished, most modules have been delivered and installed, and piping and electrical work is underway. The future operating crew has already begun training on the new processes.

With two additional nylon‑12 and precursor plants under construction at Marl Chemical Park in North Rhine‑Westphalia, Evonik will boost overall capacity for the polymer by more than 50 %. Dr. Claus Rettig, head of the Smart Materials Division, added, “Nylon‑12 remains a key pillar of our strategic growth in special applications. The new complex consolidates our position as a market leader for this high‑performance material.”

Applications span fast‑growing sectors such as automotive engineering, gas‑pipe systems, sports equipment and 3D printing.
