Italian Power Plant Achieves 1%+ Efficiency Gain with Emerson’s AMS Performance Monitor
Emerson Process Management’s AMS Suite: Equipment Performance Monitor is driving a 1%+ efficiency boost at Centro Energia Teverola S.p.a.’s 150‑MW combined‑cycle cogeneration plant in Teverola, Italy. By integrating advanced software and expert services, the company has refined its inlet‑filter maintenance approach on gas turbines.
Recognizing that incremental efficiency gains translate into substantial profit margins, Centro Energia Teverola implemented AMS Performance Monitor to systematically plan and track maintenance activities while assessing cost‑benefit outcomes. Embedded within Emerson’s PlantWeb platform, the tool marries thermodynamic‑model analytics with specialist support to identify performance degradation and enable predictive maintenance.
Prior to the deployment, sudden filter degradation forced emergency replacements, incurring high downtime costs, particularly during peak periods. AMS Performance Monitor continuously tracks filter wear, quantifying the impact on turbine output and juxtaposing it against maintenance expenses. This data empowers Centro to select the optimal replacement window and to allocate the necessary workforce efficiently.
Maintenance is now scheduled during low‑profit periods, eliminating penalties for unplanned outages, and repair times have fallen from seven to two hours.
“With AMS Performance Monitor, ROI is fast. A single filter change already paid for this service for two years,” said Vincenzo Piscitelli, general manager, Centro Energia Teverola. “We can assess the effectiveness and economic return of our maintenance activities, which allows us to determine, in a strategic and effective way, what maintenance work is required to improve equipment performance.”
As a remote service, AMS Performance Monitor eliminates the need for on‑site hardware or software. Process data is transmitted to Emerson’s performance‑monitoring center of expertise in Teesside, UK, where experienced engineers generate periodic reports illustrating monitored performance. These reports, accessible via any standard web browser, are based on thermodynamic models tailored to each machine. In addition to the online data, Emerson offers operational efficiency advice, highlighting existing or potential problems and uncovering new opportunities to raise overall efficiency.
