Cove & RWDC Secure Exclusive Deal to Produce First Fully Biodegradable Water Bottles
Los Angeles‑based sustainability firm Cove is poised to launch the world’s first fully biodegradable water bottle later this year. To bring that vision to life, the company has signed an exclusive partnership with RWDC Industries, headquartered in Athens, Ga., and Singapore. RWDC will supply its proprietary Solon PHA—a sustainably sourced, naturally occurring biopolymer—to manufacture Cove’s bottles.
RWDC produces Solon PHA from plant‑based oils, including post‑consumer and used cooking oils. Founded by Daniel Carraway and Roland Wee, the biotech firm blends deep expertise in PHA chemistry with engineering capabilities that enable cost‑effective industrial scale. Under the agreement, Cove will secure 350 million pounds of Solon PHA over five years, positioning the company to scale production to hundreds of millions of bottles in just a few years.
After a rigorous three‑year R&D program involving multiple PHA producers, Cove identified RWDC as the partner with the most advanced technology for rapid growth. The company already has substantial retail contracts lined up for its debut product launch this year.
The partnership is anchored by an exclusive license for Solon in beverage bottles and closures, with plans to extend into other product categories as Cove accelerates adoption of sustainable materials like PHA.
"We are incredibly excited to partner with Daniel and his team, who have been at the forefront of PHA innovation for two decades," said Alex Totterman, Cove’s CEO and founder.
"We are thrilled to work with the Cove team to bring PHA‑based water bottles to market. In a world where over a million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, this collaboration is a critical step toward healthier materials for people and the planet," said Dr. Daniel Carraway, co‑founder and CEO of RWDC.
