Transform Your Finished Puzzle into a Timeless Masterpiece with Epoxy Resin

Finishing a complex jigsaw puzzle is a rewarding milestone, but why not preserve that achievement as a lasting piece of décor? Encasing your completed puzzle in epoxy resin protects it from wear and creates a striking, high‑gloss display that can be cherished for years. This guide walks you through each step with clarity and precision.

Choose a mounting board

Begin by measuring your puzzle’s dimensions to determine the appropriate board size. Select a hardwood or plywood panel that is at least 1/2" thick to prevent warping. Cut the board to match the puzzle’s footprint—adding a 1/4" border is optional. A clean, flat surface will serve as the foundation for your finished piece.

Prep your puzzle

Because puzzle cardboard varies in thickness, a light seal is essential to keep resin from soaking into the edges. First, apply a thin coat of clear craft glue to the board. With a friend’s help, place the puzzle on the board and press each piece firmly so that all joints are flush.

Next, spread a very thin layer of craft glue across the puzzle’s surface. This layer prevents resin from penetrating the cardboard, eliminating the risk of black lines along the edges. The glue dries clear and won’t obscure the artwork.

Allow the glue to cure completely—overnight is ideal. By morning, your puzzle will be fully prepared for resin.

Applying the resin

Select a well‑ventilated room free from dust and pet hair. Tape the back of the board with painter’s tape to catch any drips and create a crisp edge once the resin cures.

Lift the board with a level surface and use small blocks to raise each corner, ensuring an even surface for the resin. Wear nitrile gloves to keep your hands clean.

Measure and mix the epoxy resin (such as Magic Resin) at the manufacturer’s recommended 1:1 ratio. Using a spreader, apply the resin evenly across the puzzle. The mixture will naturally self‑level to about 1/8" thickness, creating a smooth, glossy finish.

Dry, hang, and enjoy!

As the resin sets, you may see small air bubbles. A gentle burst of heat from a butane torch can eliminate them—hold the flame a few inches away to avoid scorching.

Once the resin is fully cured (usually 24–48 hours), sand the edges lightly with fine‑grit sandpaper to remove any raised seams. Attach a picture hanger or framing hardware, and your puzzle is now a polished, high‑gloss work of art ready to hang on the wall.
