From Concept to Market: IIC Testbeds Accelerate Industrial IoT Innovation
Over the past two and a half years, the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) has fostered an ecosystem where industry leaders, tech innovators, and research institutions converge to tackle the most pressing interoperability, security, and privacy challenges of industrial IoT. By collaborating within IIC testbeds, participants co‑create solutions that span healthcare, manufacturing, energy grids, agriculture, and more.
Today the network includes more than 250 organizations from around 30 countries—ranging from mining firms and manufacturers to software vendors, data‑analytics leaders, universities, and government agencies. These partners work side‑by‑side to specify, build, and validate Industrial IoT solutions in real‑world settings.
Driven by a shared commitment to disruption, IIC has grown to six Working Groups and over twenty Task Groups covering sectors such as healthcare, energy, and cybersecurity. With 25 active testbeds and an equal number under development, the community is moving quickly to translate ideas into tangible outcomes.
Testbeds: where the rubber meets the road
Complex industrial IoT deployments require the seamless integration of legacy (brownfield) and new (greenfield) equipment, and often the creation of custom solutions that aren’t yet available on the market. Testbeds provide a controlled, multidisciplinary environment where companies can pilot these integrations, validate performance, and capture best‑practice data that informs standards development.
The newly launched Industrial Internet Interoperability Coalition (I3C) will harness insights from these testbeds to shape open‑source frameworks that prioritize privacy, security, and interoperability—critical enablers for widespread IIoT adoption.
The Track and Trace Testbed
Fronted by Bosch, the Track and Trace Testbed—originally a collaboration with Tech Mahindra and Cisco, now joined by NI and SAP—delivers a connected tools platform that automates routine maintenance tasks, enhances tool performance, and reduces wear. By capturing precise positioning data of components (e.g., an aircraft’s vertical stabilizer on the shop floor), the system automatically issues torque specifications and other instructions to the relevant tooling.
Parallel to manufacturing, the Asset Efficiency Testbed—led by Infosys with support from Bosch, Intel, and PTC—leverages real‑time data analytics to anticipate failures, maximize performance, conserve energy, reduce waste, and enhance quality, ultimately driving profitability and, in some cases, life‑saving outcomes.
The Time Sensitive Networking Testbed
Supported by Bosch, National Instruments, Cisco, Intel, KUKA, Schneider Electric, and TTTech, the Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) Testbed is poised to upgrade industrial network infrastructures. TSN enables real‑time control and precise synchronization—essential for motion applications and robotics—over a single Ethernet network while still supporting conventional manufacturing traffic. This convergence of IT and OT unlocks critical data streams that fuel advanced analytics, higher performance, and new business models centered on smart, connected systems.
Industrial IoT faces broad challenges: security, privacy, standardization, data quality, real‑time analytics, and network performance, to name a few. Testbeds are the proving ground where IIC members—each bringing unique expertise—validate new technologies, refine processes, and ensure readiness before market introduction.
