SMRP Launches Diversity Initiative to Expand Inclusion and Innovation
At last year’s Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (SMRP) conference in Birmingham, Alabama, the topic of diversity surfaced—once again highlighting the gender imbalance at our events. While the comedy bit about the lack of women was intended as humor, it underscored a serious issue: our membership profile is narrow.
In response, SMRP’s Board of Directors has established a dedicated Diversity Committee, marking the first formal step toward a more inclusive community.
Diversity at SMRP
For us, diversity extends beyond gender, age, race, or religion. It also encompasses job function, industry, geography, and educational background.
Current observations show that SMRP events are dominated by white men in their 40s and 50s who work in maintenance roles across the U.S. and Canada. This homogeneity limits the breadth of perspectives that can drive innovation in reliability.
Broadening our membership to include women, people of diverse ethnic backgrounds, and professionals with varied lifestyles will enrich our community’s problem‑solving capabilities. A more heterogeneous membership brings fresh ideas for strategies, tactics, and solutions that serve all sectors of the industry.
We also aim to diversify by role and discipline. Design engineers—who shape the inherent reliability of equipment—are markedly underrepresented. Likewise, production, operations, marketing, and senior management perspectives are largely missing. Adding these voices will strengthen the link between reliability practice and business outcomes.
Expanding the range of industries represented is equally essential. Every organization that relies on equipment assets can benefit from SMRP’s expertise. Our vision is to be the global leader in maintenance and reliability, which requires outreach beyond North America.
In short, a more diverse membership will enable SMRP to serve its community better and grow in both numbers and quality of contributions.
About the Committee
Measure diversity: We will first define what diversity means to SMRP, then benchmark our current status to track progress over time.
Develop an SMRP diversity policy: The committee will draft a policy statement for inclusion in the bylaws, outlining how we will promote, celebrate, and enforce diversity.
Work with other SMRP committees: A liaison will coordinate with each directorate and committee to align their diversity initiatives with the overarching SMRP strategy.
Reach out: We will partner with other societies to attract prospective members and collaborate on shared diversity goals.
Educate our community: Through workshops and communications, we will raise awareness of why diversity matters to reliability excellence.
Join the Cause
Achieving diversity will require relentless effort, but the rewards are substantial. If you’re eager to shape the future of SMRP, we invite you to join the Diversity Committee.
The committee will launch at the July 17-19 SMRP executive meeting in Milwaukee. For questions or to sign up, contact 662‑890‑9392 or smccauley@noria.com.
