Emerson & Shell Announce Five-Year Global Framework for Automation and Services

On February 5, Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson, announced a five‑year Global Framework Agreement (GFA) with Shell, designating Emerson as the Main Automation Contractor (MAC) for all future capital projects worldwide.

Under the GFA, Emerson will deliver end‑to‑end project and support services for Main Automation Systems—including Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). The agreement also covers ongoing maintenance of existing installations and the supply of new systems for both brownfield and greenfield facilities.

While Shell has long employed a MAC strategy in its downstream operations, this partnership marks the first time the concept is being leveraged as a cornerstone of an enterprise‑wide automation strategy.

“This Global Framework Agreement marks a completely new approach within Shell,” said Nick Curley, upstream automation portfolio manager. “It is a long‑term, competitive, collaborative, performance‑based relationship that will deliver substantial value to both parties. We aim to replicate this model across other key global categories in the future.”

“This new agreement will position Emerson to significantly expand its Main Automation Contractor footprint within Shell,” added Ronaldo Marques, general manager, equipment, for Shell’s Enterprise Categories & Suppliers division. “For the first time in history, Emerson will have full, open access to all Shell business units—Upstream, Downstream, Wind, Power and Biofuels—as well as affiliated joint ventures.”

Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management, said, “We have enjoyed a solid relationship with Shell for decades. This Global Framework Agreement embodies our shared belief that early engagement, clear objectives, and collaborative practices lead to predictable success for projects and operations. We are honored to be selected as Shell’s Main Automation Contractor.”
