Pall’s SUPRApak Filters Deliver 72% Cost Savings in Sweetener Production
Pall Corporation, a global leader in filtration, separation and purification, has introduced an innovative application of its SUPRApak filters as a superior alternative to traditional sheet filters, boosting sweetener production efficiency by up to 72 %. By addressing the inherent limitations of conventional sheet filtration, SUPRApak delivers substantial operational savings while enhancing yield, process security and product quality through its fully enclosed hygienic filtration system.
“In a highly cost‑sensitive and competitive industry, every technical edge counts in reducing sweetener production costs,” said Kathleen Berry, global marketing manager for food and dairy markets at Pall. “SUPRApak filters offer increased uptime, lower product loss, reduced handling, cleaning and maintenance, and minimal filter‑material disposal—leading to operational savings of up to 72 % compared with sheet filtration.”
Traditional sheet filters are often not fully drainable, which lowers product yield. Moreover, their cleaning, tear‑down and installation cycles compromise process efficiency and drive up labor costs. Maintaining multiple seals and hydraulic tightening rams adds further complexity.

In contrast, SUPRApak modules can achieve up to six times the throughput of a comparable area of standard sheet filters while producing equivalent filtrate quality in a continuous production line. A new flow configuration maximizes the surface area, depth and adsorption mechanisms that sheet‑based systems normally provide. The resulting estimated six‑fold increase in filter life translates to a 17 % reduction in disposable costs, a 95 % drop in labor for change‑outs, a 73 % decrease in yearly maintenance, and a 94 % cut in product losses. A recent field trial processed 10 000 m³ (2.6 million U.S. gallons) of product over six weeks before filters required change‑out.
SUPRApak filter technology captures the benefits of sheet filtration while eliminating its drawbacks. For more information, visit www.pall.com/foodandbev.asp, FBABSPSWTEN.pdf or FBSUPRAPAKEN.pdf.
