University of Kansas Launches Certified Course on Managing Shutdowns

In response to the millions of dollars companies lose due to poorly planned shutdowns, the University of Kansas has introduced a new online certificate program, The Basics of Shutdowns, Turnarounds and Outages.

This course tackles the core challenges of shutdown planning and execution, specifically tailored for heavy‑maintenance settings such as refineries, power plants, chemical plants, mines, and large manufacturing facilities.

"Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to effectively manage large maintenance projects like power‑plant outages and refinery refits," explains course instructor and author of Managing Maintenance Shutdowns and Outages, Joel Levitt. "This knowledge translates into a stronger ability to plan for and execute these critical projects, ultimately reducing downtime and cost."

The curriculum is delivered in three modules, beginning on October 23, 2012. Live webinars run Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. (Eastern Time), offering real‑time interaction with the instructor and a chance to critique and improve existing maintenance programs.

All sessions are recorded, allowing participants to view missed sessions at their convenience. Online quizzes and discussion forums complement the live sessions, and can be completed on any schedule that fits the learner.
