Sensirion Launches Patient‑Side Flow Sensor for Precise Ventilator Monitoring
Modern ventilators must account for each patient’s unique physiology, demanding highly accurate inspiratory and expiratory gas flow measurements. Traditional sensors positioned inside the ventilator struggle to deliver this precision. To address this, Sensirion and Nicolay have introduced a sensor‑connector‑cable solution that places the flow sensor directly at the patient’s interface while reliably transmitting a calibrated, temperature‑compensated signal back to the ventilator. The system offers multiple cable and connector options to support a wide range of communication protocols, and it is now available through distribution channels.
The Sensirion Flow Meter (SFM) family is offered in autoclavable & washable (AW) variants or single‑use disposable (D) models. The SFM3400 is engineered for neonatal use, accurately measuring very small volumes, while the SFM3300 is tailored for adult ventilation. The SFM3200 targets expiratory flow applications. These sensors rely on Sensirion’s patented micro‑thermal technology that integrates the sensor element, signal processing, and digital calibration into a single microchip. This design yields a wide dynamic range and superior long‑term stability compared with alternative principles. Every flow meter arrives factory‑calibrated, eliminating the need for additional calibration steps.
All SFM variants connect seamlessly to ventilators via the Nicolay Flow Meter Connector. The robust mechanical interface is designed for rapid, correct attachment, ensuring safe use even in high‑pressure environments. When connected, the interface provides an IP54 leak‑proof seal, and when disconnected it allows for wipe‑disinfection. For short cable runs, a simple spring‑contact I²C connection suffices. Longer cables benefit from integrated electronics that convert signals securely. Optional RS485 or RS232 interfaces translate the data for common ventilator communication protocols. The connector lineup includes mini7 and mini12 options, and custom PCB layouts can be integrated for specialized applications.
With this integrated solution, manufacturers can deliver precise, patient‑side flow measurements that enhance ventilator accuracy and improve patient safety.
