STNRGPF12: Dual‑Channel Digital Power‑Factor Controller for 600 W+ Applications

STMicroelectronics’ STNRGPF12 dual‑channel interleaved boost‑PFC controller blends the flexibility of digital control with the precision of analog algorithms. Configurable through our eDesignSuite, it delivers superior efficiency and reliability for power‑dense systems exceeding 600 W—including industrial motor drives, EV charging stations, UPS units, 4G/5G base stations, welding equipment, telecom switches, household appliances, and data‑center power supplies.

Operating in continuous‑conduction mode at a fixed frequency, the STNRGPF12 employs average‑current‑mode control. Its inner current loop is a hardware analog PI compensator, while the outer voltage loop is handled by a fast‑response digital PI controller. This dual‑loop architecture allows precise, cascaded regulation of output voltage by controlling the total average inductor current.

Key features include digital inrush‑current limiting that uses silicon‑controlled rectifiers (SCRs) on the high‑side to enable soft‑start and improve robustness. The controller also offers load feed‑forward, current balancing, phase shedding, and fan‑control capabilities. A built‑in UART provides field‑accessible non‑volatile memory for configuration and real‑time monitoring of PFC parameters.

Designers can accelerate development by leveraging ST’s ecosystem—including the STEVAL‑IPFC12V1 dual‑channel 2 kW interleaved PFC reference design and the accompanying configuration software—to quickly prototype and validate their solutions.
