Integrated Drivers Simplify High‑Power Stepper Motor Design
Trinamic Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG has unveiled two integrated driver solutions that streamline the design and control of high‑power stepper motors. The TMCM‑1278 smart stepper motor driver module merges a motion controller and driver into one compact unit, tailored for NEMA 23 and NEMA 24 motors. The PD60/86‑1278 PANdrive offers a complete mechatronic package, pairing a motion controller/driver module with a PANdrive smart stepper motor that mounts directly on a NEMA 24 or NEMA 34 PANdrive motor.
Both systems communicate over a robust CAN bus interface and support Trinamic’s TMCL firmware as well as CANopen, giving users flexible integration options. Their modular architecture means that adding or swapping a driver requires minimal assembly and programming, allowing the same design to scale seamlessly.

The drivers are housed in a rugged enclosure, making them ideal for lab automation, manufacturing, factory automation, robotics, and CNC applications that demand up to 9 A RMS at 12.48 VDC. The PANdrive variants (PD86‑3‑1278) can deliver up to 7.0 Nm of torque.

Key features include StealthChop for ultra‑quiet operation at low speeds and standstill, and SpreadCycle for high‑speed precision, ensuring even the larger NEMA 34 motors run smoothly and silently. The integrated SixPoint ramp generator and microstepping further enhance performance.
The standalone TMCM‑1278 module and the PD60‑4H‑1278 and PD86‑3‑1278 PANdrive smart motor solutions are now available through Trinamic’s distribution channels.
