Kontron Launches CP6940: Rugged 40 GbE Switch for Extreme Environments

Kontron has unveiled the CP6940, a versatile 1/10/40 GbE switch built for CompactPCI and VME embedded platforms. Engineered for extreme conditions, the CP6940 delivers reliable performance across an extended temperature range of –40 °C to +85 °C, making it ideal for long‑term deployments in aerospace, defense, and industrial communication networks.

The switch harnesses Broadcom’s integrated single‑chip switch technology paired with a high‑performance QorIQ microcontroller, enabling rapid data‑routing for multicast traffic and superior protocol handling. It supports QSFP+ interfaces for two 40 GbE or eight 10 GbE links, and SFP+ slots for 1, 2.5, 5, or 10 GbE speeds. A cost‑effective Value edition offers Layer 2 operation for standard environments.

Compliance with PICMG 2.16 for CompactPCI and VITA 31.1 for VME guarantees interoperability. The CP6940 operates non‑blocking and delivers full Layer 2/3 functionality, complete management, and advanced features such as hot‑swap, IPMI, SNMP, integrated test utilities, IPv4/IPv6 multicast, QoS, VLAN, STP/RSTP/MSTP, 802.1AS time‑synchronization, ACL, and upgradeability to Time‑Sensitive Networking (TSN). Backward compatible with CP6930 and CP6924, the CP6940 is available for immediate purchase, with first units shipping this year.
