Bosch Launches Secure Product Fingerprint to Tackle Counterfeiting
Secure Product Fingerprint – A Proven Anti‑Counterfeiting Solution
Developed by Bosch Corporate Research in China, the patented Secure Product Fingerprint system safeguards brand integrity by generating a unique digital “fingerprint” for each item. The fingerprint is stored in the cloud, enabling customers to verify authenticity with a smartphone scan and giving manufacturers real‑time visibility into the product journey.
Why Counterfeiting Matters
In 2017 the global counterfeit market was worth US$1.2 trillion, and it is projected to reach US$1.82 trillion by 2020. Online counterfeiting alone cost brands an estimated US$323 billion in 2017. Beyond revenue loss, the reputational damage erodes consumer confidence and can haunt a brand for years.
Two‑Layer Anti‑Counterfeiting Approach
The solution combines an Artificial Fingerprint – a QR code with embedded micro‑features – and a Natural Fingerprint, a machine‑readable image of a product’s unique surface. Together they provide layered protection that is both cost‑effective and highly secure.
Artificial Fingerprint: QR Code with Embedded Security
The enhanced QR code is inexpensive to produce but requires equipment costing over one million euros to duplicate. Manufacturers order pre‑registered labels, affix them to products, and link the identifiers to Bosch.IO’s cloud services. End‑users validate by scanning with a phone – no special hardware needed – and are redirected to a secure verification page.
Natural Fingerprint: Surface‑Based Verification
Industrial cameras (10 MP+ resolution, dedicated lenses, and proper lighting) capture a designated area of the product during manufacturing. The image is stored in the cloud and later compared to a customer’s smartphone photo. This method delivers the highest level of authenticity assurance, especially for complex items like industrial pumps.
Beyond Anti‑Counterfeiting: Track & Trace & CRM
The fingerprint acts as a unique product ID that traces the item from factory to retailer to end‑user. Manufacturers can monitor stock levels, detect diversion, and optimize channel performance. Linking the fingerprint to a customer profile opens the door to personalized incentives, loyalty programs, and streamlined warranty service.
Availability & Future Rollout
Currently launched in China, the Artificial Fingerprint is commercially available since Q1 2019, while the Natural Fingerprint is slated for Q2 2019. Bosch plans to extend the offering to other Asian markets.
