Intelligent Biomanufacturing Systems: Bridging Design, Modeling, and Control in Industry 4.0

Presented by

Irina Ramos, PhD – Senior Distinguished Scientist, CMC and Innovation Lead at J&J Innovative Medicine; Dr. Tiago Matos – Assistant Professor, Instituto Técnico, University of Lisbon.

About the Talk

Industry 4.0 is reshaping manufacturing fundamentals, yet the biopharmaceutical sector lags behind in digital integration. While artificial intelligence, mechanistic modeling, and robust data infrastructures have advanced, many biomanufacturing operations still rely on siloed, conservative workflows where design, control, and production are loosely connected. This presentation challenges that paradigm, advocating for fully intelligent biomanufacturing systems that fuse process design, modeling, and control into a seamless, continuous digital framework.

At the heart of this transformation is the synthesis of first‑principles science with modern data‑driven techniques, creating predictive, adaptive decision‑making tools that span the entire product lifecycle. The road to Industry 4.0, however, is not blocked by technology but by risk aversion, regulatory complexity, and the high perceived cost of failure. Consequently, the shift toward closed‑loop, autonomous manufacturing will unfold incrementally rather than through a single disruptive leap.

This talk explores how hybrid modeling, digital twins, and advanced control strategies can bridge the gap, enabling a measured yet sustained evolution toward true autonomy. It argues that the future of biomanufacturing will be defined not by a single jump to autonomy but by the deliberate re‑engineering of data, models, and decision pathways—ultimately redefining how biological products are conceived, developed, and produced.
