Pigments are the foundation of color in our world—from the vivid reds of roses to the deep blues of denim and the cheerful yellows that brighten a room. By definition, pigments are substances that impart color to a material. While often mistaken for dyes, pigments differ fundamentally: pigments require a binder to disperse in a liquid, whereas dyes dissolve on their own.

The Vibrant Palette of Pigments

Each pigment class offers a spectrum of hues—pigment green, blue, red, yellow, and many others—each with unique historical roots. For instance, the earliest blue pigment was the mineral azurite, followed by Egyptian blue and the costly ultramarine. Red ochre was the first red pigment, while yellow ochre began the yellow tradition. Green pigments originated in antiquity by mixing blue and yellow.
