Understanding Pipe Couplings: Types, Functions, and Applications
A pipe coupling, also known as a pipe joining, is a short segment of pipe or tube that connects two sections of piping. It can join equal or different diameters and is essential for maintaining pipeline integrity, adjusting wall thickness, or repairing leaks.
In many piping systems, joints are made by cutting and reconnecting pipe sections to navigate bends, obstacles, or changes in direction. The coupling must match the pipe material—steel, copper, PVC, or other—to ensure compatibility and strength.
Couplings may be designed for permanent or temporary use, solid or fluid systems, and can modify internal diameters. Some also include accessories such as flow meters or inspection valves.
Categories of Pipe Couplings
Pipe couplings fall into two main categories:
- Permanent Coupling
- Removable Coupling
Permanent Coupling
These are typically created by soldering, brazing, or welding. For PVC, a proper solvent cement is used. When correctly installed, permanent couplings provide robust, leak‑free joints that are ideal for systems where future modifications are unlikely.
Removable Coupling
Most removable couplings are threaded. They feature a widened base with an internal thread that mates with the pipe’s external thread. The pipe ends are threaded and may be sealed with tape or a gasket to ensure a tight fit.
Applications of Pipe Couplings
Pipe couplings are ubiquitous in industries that rely on fluid transport—liquids, steam, gases, and solids. They enable easy connection and maintenance of pipe networks in:
