Gear pump specialist Slack & Parr (Derby, U.K.) reports that it has been commissioned to deliver 21 acrylic metering pumps for a new carbon fiber production line in India. The pumps will be used to produce polyacrylinitrile (PAN) precursor fibers for the manufacture of carbon fiber.
The company says its high-accuracy metering technologies are engineered to deliver a reliable and controlled flow of polymer into the processing line. Nineteen of the 21 pumps are mounted onto bespoke drive units, each fitted with a special coupling, gear box and electric brake. The contract includes three pump sizes — 1,000 cc/rev, 1,500 cc/rev and 2,000 cc/rev — which will be used in a variety of applications within the new plant.

Carbon fiber produced at the new facility will be used in the region’s aerospace, defense and infrastructure sectors, according to Slack & Parr.
“We are delighted to be involved in the realization of this highly ambitious and internationally significant carbon fiber production plant. The project draws on our extensive expertise in the processing of acrylic fibers for the composites and traditional textile industries,” says Neil Anderton, hydraulics and pneumatics director at Slack & Parr. “Our experienced design and engineering teams have worked closely with our customer to develop and test a robust and comprehensive metering solution that helps to realize the aims of this next-generation facility.”
Slack & Parr reports that its gear metering pumps for the production of PAN precursor are used in many composites manufacturing processes including coating, prepreg, filament winding and spraying, as well as in extruder-based processes most commonly used in the manufacture of thermoplastic composites.
