SABIC Launches First Certified Circular PC Resin from Upcycled Post‑Consumer Plastic

In a pioneering move, SABIC has introduced its first certified circular PC resin, built entirely from upcycled post‑consumer mixed plastic. This breakthrough product is part of SABIC’s Trucircle portfolio of circular solutions and marks a significant milestone in the plastics industry.

The certified circular PC is created through a controlled pyrolysis process that breaks down challenging-to-recycle plastics into a liquid called pyrolysis oil. This oil then serves as the feedstock for producing high‑performance building blocks that match the properties of virgin materials. The range includes renowned products such as Lexan PC, as well as SABIC’s PC blends Cycoloy and Xenoy.

Engineered to perform identically to its virgin counterpart, the circular PC can be used under the same process conditions across key sectors—including electrical & electronics, automotive, healthcare, building & construction, and consumer goods. It carries an independent ISCC PLUS certification, validated through a standardized mass‑balance approach that transparently tracks recycled content from feedstock to finished product. The ISCC PLUS accreditation ensures traceability throughout SABIC’s physically linked supply chain, meeting rigorous chain‑of‑custody requirements.

By adopting this circular approach, the new PC can reduce carbon emissions by up to 23% compared to traditional virgin material, reinforcing SABIC’s commitment to sustainability and lower environmental impact.

Previously, SABIC launched the first PC derived from certified renewable feedstock, with 60% of its composition sourced from tall oil—an by‑product of pulp waste—at the K2019 facility.
