One 3D Printer, 100 Pounds of Trash: Jim Monroe’s Community Impact Initiative

Every day we see litter in places it shouldn’t be. In Philadelphia, Jim Monroe turned that observation into a powerful movement, linking 3D printer sales to tangible environmental action.

Jim’s inspiration came during a field trip to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum with his son’s Cub Scout troop. While cleaning the trails, he filled a pickup truck bed with trash—proof that the problem was bigger than he imagined.

He decided then that each 3D printer sold would trigger a cleanup: 100 pounds of trash removed per unit. This pledge was more than a marketing tactic; it was a lesson for his son and a way to give back to the community.

So far, Jim has hauled away over 300 pounds of litter, and the initiative is growing. Partnering with The Uncommon Individual Foundation, he plans to dedicate hours of mentorship, teaching children middle‑school level CAD and 3D printing skills for every printer sold.

“Teaching kids how to operate a 3D printer and learn basic CAD can shape their future,” Jim says. “It’s a chance to ignite a dream and guide them toward a STEM career.”

His advice to others? “Spot an issue in your neighborhood—be it litter, a broken fence, or a neglected park—and find an innovative solution.”

CADimensions is proud to have Jim on our team and is excited to support his ongoing community service efforts. Thank you, Jim!
