Introducing Onyx – Markforged’s New High‑Performance Carbon‑Fiber‑Filled Nylon
Onyx is the latest addition to Markforged’s composite filament lineup. While it isn’t a new fiber, it is a carbon‑fiber‑filled thermoplastic engineered to produce parts that are strong, stiff, and dimensionally precise. Below you’ll find why Onyx stands out for industrial‑grade 3D printing.
What Is Onyx?
The name “Onyx” is inspired by the mineral known for its hard, polished finish. Though the filament contains no mineral, the name reflects the material’s superior strength, hardness, and surface quality.

Onyx blends engineering nylon with finely chopped carbon fibers. The chopped fibers deliver micro‑carbon reinforcement, giving the material a stiff, true‑to‑size geometry while maintaining nylon’s toughness and wear resistance.

Material Properties
Onyx is roughly twice as strong as ABS, thanks to its carbon‑fiber reinforcement. It also matches nylon’s engineering toughness and wear resistance, with a heat‑deflection temperature of 145 °C. When paired with Markforged’s high‑strength fibers—carbon fiber, Kevlar®, fiberglass, or HSHT fiberglass—Onyx can produce parts that achieve remarkable strength and stiffness. Dimensional Stability
Onyx’s micro‑fiber architecture minimizes thermal deformation during cooling. The result is a part that stays true to its CAD model, with reduced warping, larger overhangs, and sharper edges. This high dimensional stability allows for more accurate builds and less need for re‑printing.

The Surface Finish

Markforged printers deliver a 100‑µm layer resolution. Coupled with Onyx’s matte black finish, this produces a smooth, near‑invisible layer seam that’s ideal for customer‑facing components. Unlike standard nylon, the internal honeycomb remains invisible, giving your parts a professional look straight from the printer.
No Post‑Processing Needed!
Thanks to its dimensional stability and flawless surface, Onyx rarely requires post‑processing. You won’t need to dye, sand, or fill internal cavities. The material is ready for use immediately upon removal from the build plate.

Applications
Onyx is versatile: from functional prototypes to final‑use parts. Its strength, stiffness, and aesthetic finish make it ideal for production components that need to perform and look great. With Onyx, you can transform high‑strength, industrial 3D printed parts from prototypes into end‑products.

We’re excited for you to explore what Onyx can do. Enjoy creating high‑quality, ready‑to‑use parts!
