Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant Completes Scheduled Maintenance, Restores Unit 2 Operation

Workers at PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County, Pa., successfully finished planned maintenance on a critical water‑heating system and restarted generating electricity from Unit 2 early Monday, April 26.

Unit 2 was safely shut down early Friday, April 23, to replace a damaged tube in the system that heats feedwater before it enters the reactor. The proactive repair schedule underscores the plant’s commitment to safety and reliability.

“We take a proactive approach to maintenance to ensure that the plant operates safely and reliably,” said Jeff Helsel, plant manager. Prior to the shutdown, Unit 2 had run uninterrupted for 341 consecutive days.

The Susquehanna facility—located about seven miles north of Berwick—belongs to PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna. It is one of PPL Corporation’s key generating assets, which manages nearly 12,000 MW of capacity across the United States and supplies electricity to roughly 4 million customers in Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom.
