Maxim’s MAX86150: Integrated PPG & ECG Module for Mobile Health Monitoring

The MAX86150 from Maxim Integrated Products gives designers a streamlined path to integrate photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiography (ECG) into battery‑powered mobile devices. This first‑of‑its‑kind biosensor module incorporates on‑chip LEDs, photodetectors and an ECG analog front‑end, delivering FDA‑certifiable PPG and ECG accuracy in a footprint small enough for phones, laptops, tablets, and smart speakers.

Simultaneous, synchronized PPG and ECG measurement has traditionally required two separate sensors, inflating board space and power draw beyond what typical mobile platforms can support. Moreover, low perfusion or dry skin can degrade sensitivity. The MAX86150 overcomes these hurdles by sampling PPG and ECG concurrently, maximizing pulse‑transit‑time sensitivity while keeping power consumption minimal.

The module features a software‑controlled shutdown that achieves near‑zero standby current, allowing power rails to remain energized only when needed. Packaged in a 3.3 × 6.6 × 1.3 mm, 22‑pin optical module, the MAX86150 is ideal for compact, low‑power health monitoring solutions.
