ST Microelectronics Launches STM8L050: Low‑Cost 8‑bit MCU with Rich Analog, DMA, and EEPROM in SO‑8 Package

ST Microelectronics has introduced the STM8L050, a highly integrated 8‑bit microcontroller that delivers powerful features without breaking the bank. Built around the proven STM8 core running at up to 16 MHz, the device packs a full suite of analog peripherals, a dedicated DMA controller, and a separate 256‑byte EEPROM—all housed in a compact SO‑8 package with six user I/Os.

The integrated Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller accelerates data handling by moving blocks of information directly between peripherals and memory or between memory regions, reducing CPU load and cutting power consumption—an essential advantage for battery‑powered or energy‑harvested products.

With 256 bytes of separate EEPROM, the STM8L050 allows critical program data or configuration parameters to survive power‑down, freeing the on‑chip 8 kB Flash for application code and keeping the system lean and efficient.

Designers benefit from two comparators, a 4‑channel 12‑bit analog‑to‑digital converter (ADC), and a low‑power real‑time clock featuring programmable alarms and periodic wake‑ups. These features enable the MCU to operate with minimal external analog circuitry, further trimming BOM costs.

Flexibility is enhanced by support for either an external crystal or an internal clock source, both available up to 16 MHz. This choice allows architects to balance performance needs against cost and space constraints.

Other notable specifications include 1 kB of RAM, two 16‑bit timers, one 8‑bit timer, and standard communication interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, and SWIM for debugging.

Designed for ultra‑low‑power applications, the STM8L050 can enter power‑saving modes that reduce current to as low as 350 nA. It operates reliably over a wide voltage range of 1.8 V to 3.6 V and is rated from –40 °C to 125 °C, ensuring dependable performance in industrial controls, lighting, e‑bike systems, and more.
