ST’s STM32H7: Dual-Core, High-Performance MCUs with Integrated Security and Connectivity

The STM32H7 series from STMicroelectronics represents the pinnacle of Arm Cortex‑M general‑purpose microcontrollers, offering unmatched performance and a rich set of features for modern embedded systems. Each device combines a 480 MHz Cortex‑M7 core—the fastest member of Arm’s Cortex‑M family—with a 240 MHz Cortex‑M4 core, delivering a total of 1,327 DMIPS and 3,224 CoreMark when executed directly from embedded Flash. The Cortex‑M7’s efficient L1 cache, coupled with an adaptive real‑time ART Accelerator, unlocks new speed thresholds, while the Chrom‑ART Accelerator provides a significant boost for graphics workloads.

Power efficiency is a core design pillar: each core resides in its own power domain and can be powered down independently, enabling granular energy savings without compromising performance. This dual‑core architecture also simplifies development; developers can migrate legacy code to the Cortex‑M4 core and run sophisticated user interfaces on the Cortex‑M7, or offload demanding tasks—such as neural networks, DSP filtering, or audio codecs—to the more capable core. The result is accelerated time‑to‑market and a cleaner separation between real‑time control and high‑level application logic.

Security is built in from the ground up. The STM32H7 ships with pre‑installed cryptographic keys and native secure services, including Secure Firmware Install (SFI). SFI allows customers to order standard parts worldwide and receive encrypted firmware ready for deployment without exposing the underlying code. Additional protections such as Secure Boot and Secure Firmware Update (SB‑SFU) safeguard over‑the‑air upgrades and patch deployments.

Unlike flash‑less competitors, the STM32H7 provides up to 2 MB of on‑chip Flash and 1 MB of SRAM, dramatically reducing external memory requirements and simplifying board‑level design for industrial, consumer, and medical applications that demand real‑time performance or AI processing. Its Cortex‑M7 level‑1 cache and versatile memory interfaces support high‑throughput access to external memory.

Advanced safety and performance features include Error Correction Code (ECC) for all Flash and RAM, multiple high‑resolution 16‑bit ADCs, an ambient temperature range up to 125 °C for harsh environments, a built‑in Ethernet controller, several FD‑CAN interfaces for gateway functionality, and ST’s latest high‑resolution timer for precise waveform generation.

ST enriches the developer experience through the STM32Cube ecosystem. The new STM32CubeH7 firmware modules provide ready‑to‑use application source code, including TouchGFX and STemWin graphical stacks. Complementary hardware is available via new Evaluation, Discovery, and Nucleo boards, while the STM32Cube development environment—including STM32CubeMX, STM32CubeProgrammer, the ST‑MC‑SUITE motor‑control toolkit, and STM32CubeAI—offers comprehensive tools and certified partner solutions.
