Kontron Launches AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000‑Based COM Express Compact Modules for High‑Performance, Fanless Embedded Systems

Kontron has unveiled a new line of COM Express Compact Type 6 modules powered by AMD’s Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC. These modules, available in the 12‑25 W class, combine the proven “Zen” architecture with a fanless, compact design that meets the growing demand for high‑performance, low‑power embedded solutions.

Designed for harsh environments, the rugged modules offer memory‑down options and a footprint that is roughly 22 % smaller than the classic COM Express Basic form factor, making them ideal for real‑time industrial controls, machine GUIs, panel PCs, medical devices, infotainment, gaming and digital signage.

Each module is built around a dual‑core Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC, slated for ten‑year availability. The SoC retains the high‑performance “Zen” cores of the V1000 family, supports up to 24 GB of ECC DDR4 (soldered or optional), and delivers 1 MB of shared L2 cache plus 4 MB of shared L3 cache for maximum bandwidth.

The integrated Radeon Vega 3 GPU features three compute units and can drive up to three UHD 4K displays at 60 Hz, giving designers a powerful graphics engine for demanding applications.

With the same unified PI (BIOS) and minimal firmware tweaks, the new modules provide engineers with a turnkey platform that delivers a fresh class of performance for embedded solutions.

Key connectivity includes USB 3.1 Gen 2, high‑speed PCIe 3.0 lanes (one of which can be routed to a PCIe 2.0 switch for four additional lanes), and three independent display ports. The modules also support SATA, I²C, SMBus, two serial interfaces, high‑definition audio, and Gigabit Ethernet.

Kontron’s APPROTECT solution protects the software stack with an optional Wibu‑Systems security chip and a custom framework that safeguards IP and prevents reverse engineering. APPROTECT licensing enables flexible business models such as pay‑per‑use demos and usage‑based limits.
