Renesas Elevates Indoor Air Quality Sensor Platform with Embedded AI for Enhanced Odor Detection
Renesas Electronics Corp. has expanded its ZMOD4410 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sensor platform with embedded artificial intelligence (e‑AI) that enhances odor sensing for ventilation systems, bathroom monitoring, and air quality devices. The neural‑network‑trained firmware delivers higher‑resolution measurements on a range of microcontrollers, including the RL78 MCU.
The updated ZMOD4410 platform can detect odor‑indicating gases in small enclosed spaces with greater accuracy, reduce part‑to‑part variability, and differentiate between sulfur‑ and ethanol‑based smells. These are the first e‑AI firmware upgrades in Renesas’s new suite of AI‑powered solutions.
The platform’s software‑configurable architecture allows field firmware updates for application‑specific functions, such as selective volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements. The new AI firmware brings IAQ measurements into line with international standards, enabling low‑ppm detection of total VOCs (TVOCs) and improved estimated carbon dioxide (eCO₂) readings. While the firmware is currently available for Renesas RL78 MCUs, it can be ported to any Renesas MCU family (RE, RA, RX) or other general‑purpose MCUs.
The ZMOD4410 uses proven metal‑oxide (MOx) technology, and each sensor undergoes rigorous electrical and chemical testing to ensure lot‑to‑lot consistency. The devices are also highly resistant to siloxanes, ensuring reliable performance in harsh environments.
