Nanoporous Silica Tablets for Quantifying Biomolecules and Nanoparticles via Water Self‑Diffusivity in Bio‑Inspired Pores

Abstract

Drawing inspiration from the intricate nanostructure of diatom algae frustules, we present a novel approach that uses engineered nanoporous silica tablets to quantify the concentration of biomolecules or nanoparticles suspended in water. The method hinges on the well‑established reduction of water’s self‑diffusion coefficient when confined within nanopores—a phenomenon that is further modulated by the presence of solutes. By measuring the confined water diffusivity, for instance with quasi‑elastic neutron scattering (QENS) or diffusion‑weighted magnetic resonance imaging (D‑MRI), we can infer the solute concentration with sub‑percent accuracy. Molecular dynamics simulations and literature data confirm a robust correlation between water diffusivity and solute load, while estimates of pore‑filling times suggest the protocol can be completed in under an hour for realistic tablet dimensions. This bio‑inspired nano‑metering strategy offers a rapid, low‑cost alternative for detecting emerging nanopollutants and trace biomolecules in aqueous environments.
