VTT Pioneers Pectin‑Derived Biobased PEF to Replace Fossil‑Based PET

Finland’s VTT technical research center has unveiled a breakthrough technology that converts pectin‑rich agricultural waste—such as citrus peels and sugar beet pulp—into high‑performance biobased polyethylene furanoate (PEF). This plant‑based polymer offers a compelling alternative to fossil‑derived polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used in everyday bottles and food packaging.

VTT estimates that substituting PET with biobased PEF could reduce the carbon footprint of plastic bottles and food containers by up to 50%. “In the near future, you may buy orange juice in bottles made from orange peel,” explains VTT professor of practice Holger Pöhler. “Our technology creates a circular loop that turns food waste into premium packaging while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.”

Beyond carbon savings, PEF’s superior barrier properties surpass those of PET, extending the shelf life of packaged foods. VTT’s proprietary process leverages a stable intermediate to efficiently produce 2,5‑furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA)—a key monomer in PEF—ensuring high yield and purity. This method unlocks the circular economy potential of pectin‑laden waste streams.

VTT’s scalable platform—from laboratory prototypes to pilot‑scale production—has already achieved a technology readiness level that positions polymer manufacturers for a seamless transition to commercial biobased PEF production.
