Avient’s New Signal‑Transparent TPEs Power High‑Speed 5G Connectivity

Avient Corp has introduced two patent‑pending Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs) — Versaflex CE 3140 — designed specifically for 5G applications. These TPEs are engineered to be transparent to high‑frequency signals, delivering exceptional permittivity and minimal signal loss at millimeter‑wave (mmWave) frequencies that underpin next‑generation 5G performance.

Consumer‑electronics manufacturers increasingly demand materials that can reliably carry data at 5G’s high‑end mmWave bands. At these frequencies, signal wavelengths are short, making transmission vulnerable to interference from everyday objects such as trees, glass windows, and even phone cases. Avient’s Versaflex CE 3140 addresses this challenge by offering superior signal‑transmission properties that maintain data integrity and reduce latency.

The new, signal‑transparent Versaflex CE 3140 TPEs are ideal for 5G mobile‑device accessories, including phone cases. They exhibit a lower dielectric constant (Dk) and dissipation factor (Df) compared to conventional TPEs, resulting in less signal attenuation. These grades are globally available, fully injection‑moldable, and compatible for overmolding onto PC, ABS, PC/ABS, and COPE. They are naturally colorless, allowing easy coloration to match brand guidelines.

Both formulations were engineered to surpass the industry benchmark for phone‑case materials: a Dk below 2.5 at 37 GHz. At 40 GHz, the 65 Shore A variant achieves 2.49 Dk and 0.024 Df, while the 90 Shore A variant delivers 2.54 Dk and 0.021 Df.

“As device manufacturers roll out 5G‑ready products, case makers need materials that support mmWave transmission to unlock full signal performance,” says Matt Mitchell, Global Marketing Director of Avient’s Specialty Engineered Materials. “Our specialty TPEs give case manufacturers a competitive edge, enabling them to differentiate their next‑generation products and delight end users.”
