Lanxess Launches 92% Biobased Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Nylon 6 – Scopeblue Circular Economy Solution
A breakthrough in sustainable polymers: Lanxess introduces Durethan BlueBKV60H2.0EF, a 92% biobased glass‑fiber‑reinforced Nylon 6. It is the first material in the Scopeblue family that either derives at least 50 % of its raw materials from circular sources or achieves a carbon footprint that is 50 % lower than conventional counterparts.
Key to the material’s sustainability is the use of cyclohexane sourced from renewable feedstocks—either biobased, recycled biobased, or produced via chemical recycling. In addition, 60 % by weight of the polymer is reinforced with glass fibers made from industrial glass waste, replacing conventional mineral raw materials. Because the alternative precursors are chemically identical to fossil‑based equivalents, Durethan BlueBKV60H2.0EF retains the same mechanical performance and can be processed on existing production lines without any conversion work.
“A carbon‑neutral future can only become a reality if we adopt more sustainable products,” says Frederique van Baarle, head of Lanxess’ High‑Performance Materials division. “Our first Scopeblue product offers a real circular‑economy solution—a certified premium material that’s built on sustainable raw materials.”
Guenter Margraf, head of global product management for HPM, adds, “This high‑strength, high‑rigidity structural material can replace its fossil‑based counterpart in every application—from automotive front‑end panels and brake pedals to oil pans. We’re already working to raise the sustainable content to 100 %, which will require carbon‑neutral hydrogen for ammonia synthesis, and to replace additives with sustainable equivalents over the medium term.”
All raw materials are ISCC Plus certified, confirming their sustainable origin. The certification covers Lanxess’ production sites in Antwerp and Krefeld‑Uerdingen, as well as suppliers whose precursors are also ISCC Plus‑certified.
