SABIC Launches Sustainable PC Copolymer Blend Rich in Post‑Consumer Recycled Content
SABIC has unveiled LNP Thermocomp DC0041PE-7M1D145W, a new bio‑based PC copolymer blend that incorporates a significant amount of post‑consumer recycled (PCR) resin. The material is engineered for high‑performance applications across electrical/electronics, healthcare, and other critical sectors.
This flame‑retardant, carbon‑fiber reinforced compound delivers the same high‑temperature resistance, mechanical performance, and structural integrity as its fossil‑based predecessor while reducing the carbon and energy footprint.
By replacing 21 kg of fossil‑based material per 100 kg of the new compound with bio‑derived feedstocks—such as crude tall oil and hydro‑treated vegetable oils—the mass‑balance approach achieves a 21 % material substitution. Additionally, more than 50 % of the resin and pre‑consumer carbon fiber originate from recycled sources.
An ISO 14040/14044 cradle‑to‑gate life‑cycle assessment, using SABIC’s primary data and industry averages, found a potential carbon‑footprint reduction of up to 17 % compared with the fossil‑based LNP Thermocomp P DC0041PE‑7M1D145.
This new compound complies with REACH and RoHS, ensuring chemical safety and regulatory alignment.
Because its mechanical and processing properties remain unchanged, LNP Thermocomp DC0041PE-7M1D145W serves as a drop‑in replacement, enabling customers to upgrade their sustainability profile without any redesign.
“SABIC continues to invest in cutting‑edge research and development focused on improving the sustainability of our products without compromising on performance and processability,” said Joshua Chiaw, Business Management Director for LNP Compounds & Noryl Resins. “All aspects of the value chain, from raw materials to finished goods, are certified through ISCC and compliant with regional and global regulations. The success of our first biobased compound inspires us to accelerate innovation to support customers and protect the planet.”
Manufactured in the Asia Pacific region, the LNP Thermocomp DC0041PE-7M1D145W compound will be expanded to additional geographies as demand grows.
